A Study on the Curriculum of the Master¢¥s Degree Program in Nursing

Abstract
The study has been designed to test the validity of current graduate programs of nursing in Korea in responding to the changing requirements of the society and for the expectations held for graduates of graduate nursing programs in their role functions in the society.
Curricular issues are discussed and suggestions are made on the grounds of an overview of trends in graduate education in international spheres, an analysis of current curricula offerings in Korea and the study of the utilization rate of curricula content of graduate programs in role functions of the masters graduates.
Currently there are thirteen master level graduate programs for advanced nursing studies in Korea. In this study all of these programs have been reviewed and a total of 75 graduates of these programs currently at work either as nurse faculty members or nurse clinicians have participated.
The current curricula offerings are found to be broadly foccused on six major areas: nursing theory, education, research, administration, clinical nursing subjects and allied fields of basic sciences. The trends show that the curricula emphasis shifted from the preparation of teachers of nursing primarily toward varied role preparation for the graduates with particular interest in the development of nursing science as a unique academic discipline.
The current trends in general of curricular change seem to reflect the changing needs of the discipline well, however, advanced preparation for top level nurse administrators and the leaders for expanding primary health care service need additional curricular considerations for graduate level studies.
